Building a custom extra wide splitboard: 37cm wide
In December 2024, we embarked on a unique project: building a custom extra wide splitboard for Roy, a dedicated snowboarder with specific needs. Roy's main goal was to eliminate toe drag, a common issue he faced with his current board due to his larger boot size.
The design process was a true collaboration. Roy provided a 3D scan of his existing board and expressed his desire for a wider waist width. Our craftsman Hugo initially had mold limitations, but we explored solutions to accommodate Roy's request. We also worked closely with Roy on the graphic design, incorporating his artistic vision.
One of the key challenges was finding a balance between stiffness and weight. Roy's initial request to increase the woodcore thickness would have resulted in a very stiff and heavy board. Through discussions and careful consideration of materials, we arrived at a compromise that maintained the desired stiffness without sacrificing weight.
The camber profile was another crucial aspect. Roy was accustomed to hybrid rocker profiles, but we suggested a camber profile with early-rise rocker for improved carving performance on hardpack. After some back and forth, we settled on a design that incorporated elements of both, ensuring the board would handle a variety of snow conditions.
Throughout the process, we maintained open communication with Roy, sharing drawings, mock-ups, and updates. We also addressed his concerns about specific details, such as the nose radius and insert placement. Roy's feedback was invaluable in ensuring the final product met his expectations.
In the end, we successfully built a custom extra wide splitboard that was tailored to Roy's unique needs and preferences. The project was a testament to the power of collaboration and our commitment to crafting high-quality, personalized snowboards.
